Summary

Designed for novices as well as students of psychology and literary criticism, these systematic lectures do much to clarify Lacan's groundbreaking work on the birth of the subject and its links with Freud's theory of drives。 Moreover, they answer some of the criticisms that have been leveled at Lacan by forms of psychoanalysis unable or unwilling to incorporate his ideas。

This was helpful in my learning of Lacan's concept of anxiety。 This book entered my life when I was driving through Portland and stopped at Powell's。 I couldn't resist buying the book as I was beginning a journey into the world of Lacan。 I tried reading this a few times, but couldn't really。Suddenly things clicked with Lacan for me after spending a lot of time learning the Graph of Desire, and all other sorts of readings I've done。 This time going through the book was a different experience as I This was helpful in my learning of Lacan's concept of anxiety。 This book entered my life when I was driving through Portland and stopped at Powell's。 I couldn't resist buying the book as I was beginning a journey into the world of Lacan。 I tried reading this a few times, but couldn't really。Suddenly things clicked with Lacan for me after spending a lot of time learning the Graph of Desire, and all other sorts of readings I've done。 This time going through the book was a different experience as I had taken on the discourse and all the signifiers attributed to it。I found the introduction very helpful with situating what Lacan does in Seminar X。 I haven't finished reading the Seminar yet, but have been reading a little here and there。 This book really takes a lot of the meat out of Lacan's Seminar presentation of the material。 I suggest read both the Seminar and this book。What I didn't find helpful was Harari's new graph of anxiety。 I kind of think it's bullshit。 Whatever, just another way to explain some of Lacan's stuff so in one sense it's useful, in another I kind of think Harari is trying to be the new Lacan in a sense。 That guy thinks he's Lacan or something with all that complicated graphs? A visual representation is just that。 Maybe thats the lesson。。。I'll probably re-read this here and there。 I don't think I've digested everything that's been written here so as I review anxious experiences I will come back to this book。 Definitely happy to have it on my shelf。 。。。more
